Remember, the brightly colored bigger than life hula hoops of the sixties and seventies?  I know that I do. And, I can remember trying to twirl and swirl those hips to keep it from cascading to the ground.  Great fun, wasn't it?  Guess what?  Scientists are finding that it is also great for exercise and health.

A new study sponsored by the American Council on Exercise shows that hula hooping is a great form of adult exercise.

In the study, led by a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 16 women , aged  from 16 to 59 worked out by twirling weighted hula hoops around their waists, arms and legs for 30 minutes.  The researchers found that hula hooping burned about 210 calories per 30 minute workout, or as many calories per minue as step aerobics, boot camp, or brisk walking.

They also found that the exercise provides a total-body workout that can improve flexibility and balance and strengthen muscles in the back, abdomen, arms and legs.

Well, I guess it's time to pull out those old time acitivities and learn how to get healthier this summer.  What better way to enjoy the warm weather?
