Osteoporosis has become a disease that is almost synonymous with aging, being female and insufficient vitamins to keep our bones healthy.  Is this what you think about the disease?  Well, this is not entirely true.

What are the facts regarding this illness and how can we avoid it? Please consider the following information.

Facts about Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that we do not have to have.  This information is from The Sun Herald of Australia.  The disease is highly preventable.  But, it is predicted that by the year 2020, one of three hospital beds will be occupied by women with fractures.

A report by Osteoporosis Australia shows that the disease is more prevalent than high cholesterol, allergies or the common cold.  Its management costs more than diabetes or asthma related costs.
And, surprisingly, the death rate is higher in women from hip fractures is greater than the incidence of all female cancers combined.  That is some number.

How to protect yourself

The best defense against this disease is to build peak bone mass in the first three decades of life through exercise and adequate calcium intake.  The risk of suffering from osteoporosis can also be greatly reduced by discontinuing smoking, excessive alcohol or caffeine beverage.

Participating in any group of activities is another great idea to present onset.  Consuming foods high in vitamin D and calcium are essential.

Protect your Skin this winter with Vitamin C

We've heard for years that Vitamin C is important for health and that it helps fight off colds and strengthens the immune system.  Today, with the increasing knowledge of antioxidants and the benefits that they provide, vitamin C is now becoming important in the care of the skin and in anti-aging skin care.

Why is Vitamin C important?  Let's take a look.

How your skin benefits from Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is an important weapon in the arsenal against anti-aging skin care. Vitamin C is important in nearly all body processes: it can be found helping the immune system to fight off foreign invaders and tumor cells, it supports the cardiovascular system, as well as functioning as a primary ingredient of collagen.  Unfortunately, humans are one of the few animals that cannot produce Vitamin C on our own, so we must rely upon foods and outside sources to provide  this vital nutrient.

Your skin will benefit from Vitamin C through your diet, supplement, or when applied topically. When applied to the skin, Vitamin C stimulates cell renewal, collagen and elastin production and increases healthy circulation. Vitamin C also boosts your skin's natural immune properties and its can help minimize the damage caused by free radicals from the sun, pollution and smoking. Free radicals accelerate skin damage and the wrinkles associated with premature aging.

Hyperpigmentation

Vitamin C can also help brighten the skin, reducing the discoloration of the skin that can occur from years of sun exposure. This is particularly interesting to women of color who note this problem with aging.  Vitamin C provides an effective non-chemical means of lightening those areas of discoloration.
