It's a fact, like it or not, that as we age, more effort is required to learn new things and remember old ones. The old memory just isn't functioning like it used to. For example, little things seem to disappear, recollection of names and faces are just a bit more challenging. We all can identify with such litlle incidents. What is going on here? This is because of many factors including chronic ailments, bombardment by free radicals through inflammation from such ailments, medication use, circulatory problems.  The list is almost endless.

But, what can we do to help improve the memory thus slowing down decline?

Tips to improve the memory

Tips to improve and help jog the memory include exercising the brain with stimulating activities such as jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, mah-jong, dominos, learning a new language and even ball room dancing. Experts state that such activities stimulate brain function. The more the brain is used, the more  learning pathways are formed which makes learning easier.  Without such stimulation, existing pathways deteriorate with brain shrinkage occurring.  This accelerates the onset of disease such as Alzheimer's and dementia.

Socializing, forming new friends, learning new  hobbies and even travel help to stimulate the brain, which delays the onset memory impairment, decreased brain function and memory loss.
