Healthy Atlernatives to Milk for the Lactose Intolerant

A popular non-dairy soymilk alternative to tra...Image via Wikipedia
If you are lactose intolerant, like me, then you are always reading and checking labels for the dairy content in your favorite foods.  Even worse, if you decide to indulge in ice cream or mac and cheese, you will probably suffer for days if you didn't take a lactaid pill.  Well, I have found some natural alternatives to those who feel deprived of their favorite smooth, dairy drinks.

Hemp

Hemp is high in omega-3s, acutually, it is a healthier choice than milk.  It goes nicely into creamy soups, and custards.

Potatoes in creamy soups

Boy, do I miss the taste of New England clam chowder.  But, you know what will give you that creamy taste?  Potatoes.  I have been making a lot of homemade soups and have substituted potatoes for milk and cream.  What I do is cook the potatoes in a homemade broth, whip them in a blender and return them to the pan.  The results amazed me!

Soy

Soy is a well known alternative to milk.  It comes in many flavors, such as chocolate and vanilla.  You don't even miss the taste of milk.  It is also high in protein.

Just be careful to avoid the genetically modified soybeans.

BTW, they are great in sauces and puddings.

Rice Milk

This is another goodie,  It is great in cereal.  I have even made creamy, mashed potatoes with them.  It is low in calories and is well tolerate by those with allergies.
