ADHD: Does it increase the Risk of Substance Abuse?

People with ADHD are usually dealing with a number of behavioral and intellectual challenges and stereotypes. Now, due to the findings of research studies, this special population of people are more prone to alcoholism abuse than the regular population. Why? This article will examine some of the facts.

What are the study results?

People with ADHD are usually more impulsive and more likely to have behavioral problems which can lead to alcoholism and drug abuse. And, for a double whammy, an alcoholic youngster with and alcoholic parent is more likely to develop alcoholism. This is due to the common gene shared between ADHD and Alcoholism. (webmd.com)

Many parents are also concerned whether stimulant drugs are used to treatment ADHD are addictive. Ritalin and other drugs work by increasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter. Remember, dopamine helps folks with attention deficit stay more focused. On the other hand, dopamine is also responsble for pleasure feelings similar to cocaine and other street drugs. In large quantities, Ritalin does the same thing. But, the amount of dopamine required to get a cocaine -like high is much more than is given in a dose of ritalin. Now, to produce the elevated dopamine for abuse depends on how quickly dopamine is increased. For example, ritalin increases dopamine in one hour. Cocaine increase dopamine in just seconds. You can help your child in helping her to avoid such problems by eating cerain healthy and nutritional foods: swithuch as whole grains, colorful vegetables and nutritious fruits. Avoid food coloring, sugary fruit juices and jams, jello.
